pgic-terms-and-conditons-pic.jpgOur Commitment to Quality
We source our carbon offsets from a variety of renewable energy sources that either displace conventional generation sources with carbon neutral energy sources. The environmental benefits are retained by the offset producer and are offered to you our customer. In that way you neutralize your carbon emissions by paying for carbon reductions in another location.

Carbon offsets from renewable energy projects are known as Renewable Energy Certificates or RECs (or Green Tags) and the carbon emissions offset are calculated based on accepted North American Standards in use in various jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S. We sell carbon offsets measured in kilograms of avoided carbon dioxide emissions, because we offset more than electricity use.

Offsets from Cogeneration
The LP - Golden cogeneration plant produces approximately 2,690 kg of offsets for each 1,000 kWh of electricity sent to the grid. Why so much? The LP-Golden plant was designed to run on fuel oil, now runs on biomass. The plant is twice as efficient as an ordinary plant. The plant therefore produces much more carbon offsets per kWh of electricity than a conventional project because the contribution of the fuel used to produce heat is also included in the calculation.

Currently our offset mix is sourced from:

LPs Biomass Cogeneration Plant in Golden BC. The power from this facility is certified as green power by the Environmental ChoiceM program (ECP) on behalf of Environment Canada, to certify existing and new green energy from independent power producers (IPPs). Facilities that successfully meet these standards receive the Program's official symbol of certification: Eco-LogoM: The New Mark of Green Energy.

(To be updated) Wind Farm in Alberta. Power from this facility is certified as green power by the Environmental ChoiceM program (ECP) as above. The wind farm displaces fossil fuel generation in Alberta and generates approximately 960 kg of carbon emission reductions per 1,000 kWh of electricity delivered to the Alberta power grid.

The plug into greenTM Carbon Offset Purchase Agreement
The Terms and Conditions for Simple Carbon Offset Retail Purchase are outlined below. This is an agreement for the purchase of a specific quantity of Carbon Offsets measured in kg of CO2e as stated in your Certificate. We transfer ownership of the environmental attributes associated with a specific quantity of electricity delivered to the power grid from the green electricity producer at the wholesale power price (No premium is paid to the producer, and in exchange the power producer retains ownership of the associated environmental attributes). Cooler Skies Company through its plug into greenTM program markets and sells Carbon Offsets for independent project owners under a contractual arrangement.

Electricity is sold in quantities of kilowatt-hours, and because each kilowatt-hour of power generated and delivered to the power grid has a measurable quantity of environmental attributes proportional to the quantity of power generated, Carbon Offsets may be purchased in kilograms per kilowatt-hours (kg/kWh), but are sold in kg because we offset more than electricity use.

When we sell you our carbon offsets, we will explicitly state in your purchase summary and certificate the actual number of kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions that have been removed or displaced: Carbon offset Certificates effectively offset carbon emissions and are measurable and verifiable net reductions of greenhouse gases. Offsets are usually stated as kilograms of CO2e (Carbon dioxide equivalents) offset per kilowatt-hour of power delivered to the power grid (and eventually to your home or business.

The purchase of our Carbon offsets allows an emission reduction achieved at the our projects to be purchased by a business or individual in order to offset the carbon emissions produced due to their electricity and other fuel uses, such as the use of Natural Gas or Fuel Oil. It allows us to recover the costs of better environmental performance and you the buyer to choose a greener alternative at a lower cost. As a result, your investment dollars can move towards the most environmentally-friendly, cost-effective greenhouse gas reduction opportunities available.

Our Commitment to you

Our disclosure statement
Your purchase of plug into greenTM carbon offsets (or greenhouse gas offsets) is supporting the reduction of carbon emissions into our atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels (primarily coal, oil and natural gas and the derivatives of oil, such as gasoline for cars and trucks) is causing the chemical makeup of our atmosphere to change dramatically. The change in the atmosphere is already affecting the global climate. A typical family of four will produce approximately 20,000 kg or 20 tonnes of carbon emissions in a year. Home energy use and automobiles are a big piece of the problem.

The purchase of our carbon offsets can displace the carbon emissions from your lifestyle. The purchase of carbon offsets is helping to develop alternative energy projects that don't use fossil fuels and therefore do not contribute to global warming and therefore climate change.

Product Disclosure

We purchase carbon offsets from electrical generation facilities in kilowatt-hours (or kWh), where each kilowatt-hour of renewable energy produced will generate a specific amount of carbon reductions. The accepted North American standard for calculating the amount of carbon offset by renewable energy facilities is based on the generation mix of the provincial power grid.

For example, a typical renewable energy plant located in BC will generate 27.3 kg of carbon offsets for every 1,000 kWh of energy produced. In Alberta, where more electricity is generated by fossil-fuels, the same amount of renewable power will generate 962.6 kg of carbon offsets for every 1,000 kWh of electricity produced.

Offsets from the Weber County Landfill Gas in Utah are produced from the destruction of methane; they are measured in kg and do not represent a displacement of electricity, but the quantity (in kg) of methane destroyed: The conversion of a potent greenhouse gas (methane or CH4) into a less potent greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide or CO2). The measurement of the ability to "trap" heat in the atmosphere, not unlike a "greenhouse" is defined on a scale with carbon dioxide as the basis. This ability is known as a gas' "Global Warming Potential" (or GWP). The GWP of methane is 23 times greater than carbon dioxide. Carbon offsets from the Weber County Methane Recovery project is calculated as follows: The total amount of methane burned to produce electricity multiplied by 23 (this converts the equivalent carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the removal of methane from the landfill) The amount of carbon dioxide emitted as a result of the destruction of methane is then deducted from this amount. Thus only the carbon offsets from the destruction of methane are counted.

The purchase of offsets help build a market for greenhouse gas offsets and reduce global climate change, and have other environmental benefits such as reducing regional air pollution.

When our carbon offsets or greenhouse gas emissions reduction certificates (ERCs) are purchased, the ownership of the environmental benefits (primarily a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions) measured in tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (or CO2e) are transferred to the purchaser. The amount of carbon emissions purchased will be explicitly stated on your purchase certificate and are measured in tons of carbon dioxide (or in the case of other greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide equivalents or CO2e) of emissions avoided.
